Obituary for Randy Sharp
Randall B. Sharp, 64, died of cancer on the
evening of September 17, 2011 in Denton, Texas.
A strong, funny and honest man who was quick to
laugh and slow to judge others, Randy will always be remembered for
his ability to make others smile with his razor-sharp wit and
ever-present sense of humor, which he kept until the end of his
days.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Randy
is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carol, daughter Katy Landdeck
and her husband John, son Richard Sharp, daughter Sarah Sharp and
his two granddaughters Caroline and Alice, who brought him such
added joy in his last years.
Randy was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Ralph
and Blanche Sharp, who preceded him in death, and was raised in Des
Moines along with his surviving brother Michael Sharp and sister
Marcia Sharp. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines,
Iowa
and attended Grandview College and Drake University.
He met his wife Carol when they were sixteen and
working at Bishop's Buffet in Des Moines. He thought she was a
"knockout" and worked to convince her he was the boy for her. They
were a perfect match, and after five years of devoted courtship they
married on November 11, 1967.
Randy and Carol laughed their way through good
times and bad, with their good-humored sparring and deep respect for
one another. They showed their children that true love isn't sappy
or shallow, but that it is honest and deep and worth working to find
and hold onto.
Randy served his country as a Medical Service
Specialist in the Iowa Air National Guard from to 1967-1973, when he
was honorably discharged as a Technical Sergeant.
He had a long, successful career in sales
including as a Realtor in the Table Rock Lake community of Shell
Knob, Missouri. His last position, which he greatly enjoyed, was as
a title and right-of-way agent for Coates Fields Service
throughout rural Kansas.
For almost 20 years, Randy was a passionate
soccer coach, volunteer and organizer in Springfield, Missouri,
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Omaha, Nebraska. He coached all three of
his children, and helped hundreds of young men and women learn about
and develop a life-long love of the sport.
He was instrumental in helping establish a girl’s
high school soccer program at Springfield Kickapoo High School in
Springfield, Missouri.
Randy was an avid organic gardener long before it
was considered trendy, a fisherman who loved boating on Table Rock
Lake from his home in Shell Knob, Missouri, and an ardent wine
enthusiast. He possessed exceptional talents behind a Weber, and was
revered by family and friends for his legendary pizza-making
prowess.
A private man, he loved his family deeply and
they did the same.
As a father, Randy will be remembered for the
unconditional love and decades of laughter he provided for his
children. He taught his children how to drive, water ski, and not
take themselves too seriously.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you
buy yourself a really nice bottle of wine, share a good meal with
your family, and raise a glass to a wonderful man.
